Posterous solved a real problem with unusual elegance. In 2008, publishing anything online required navigating a content management system—logging in, choosing a post type, formatting text, uploading attachments, and hitting publish. Posterous eliminated every step except one: composing an email.
A user would write an email to post@posterous.com. The subject line became the post title. The body became the post content. Any attachment—a photo, an MP3, a PDF, a video file—was automatically formatted and hosted by Posterous. The platform then cross-posted the content to whatever social networks the user had connected: Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, and others. Posthaven's founding premise was the lesson Posterous learned too late. Tan launched Posthaven as a paid service with an explicit promise never to sell.
